Setting Up Your Own Webcam
What You Need
In order for you to have a simple Webcam, you need:
A suitable camera connected to your computer.
Software that can take a frame from the camera say every few seconds or minutes.
A Web server.
Some people use their home computer as a Web server.
You will need the ability to move frames from your computer to the Web server, normally by File Transfer Protocol (FTP), although several other protocols can be used.
A good connection between your computer and the Internet.
Some companies now even offer a free place to upload your images. By using one of these webcam services, you can avoid having to host or maintain your own Web site. If you are using one of these services, then you need:
- A camera connected to your computer.
- Software that can take a frame from the camera say every few seconds or minutes.
- A good connection between your computer and the Internet.
If your connection is not reliable, the image will be unable to refresh itself as it should.
